Family Life and ISKCON’s Fourth Principle

A precise and respectful explanation of traditional sexual ethics.

Introductory editorial content; doctrinal review is required before public publication.

The fourth regulative principle is described in ISKCON sources as abstinence from illicit sex. The traditional standard for initiates situates sexual relations within marriage and orients them toward procreation.

This is a particular religious teaching about self-discipline and family life. Others may hold different personal or religious convictions.

Public guidance should explain this without judging visitors’ intimate lives, identities or relationships. Joining a kīrtan or class does not require adopting or disclosing such commitments.

Contact forms should not request information about sexuality or religious beliefs. Personal questions, if desired, belong in confidential, voluntary conversations.
