Prasādam: The Meaning of Offering Food to Krishna

Food, gratitude and hospitality within devotional practice.

Introductory editorial content; doctrinal review is required before public publication.

Prasādam refers to food offered to Krishna and later shared. It is not merely another word for vegetarian food: the offering and devotional intention matter to its religious meaning.

Bhagavad-gītā 9.26 mentions offering a leaf, flower, fruit or water with love. Today, communities prepare vegetarian dishes suitable for offering, observing their temple’s kitchen and cleanliness guidelines.

Foods for offerings generally exclude meat, fish, eggs, onion and garlic. Traditional dishes may contain dairy products or nuts, so vegetarian food is not necessarily vegan or free from allergens.

Sharing food responsibly includes identifying ingredients and allergens. Food safety is a practical obligation distinct from a meal’s spiritual significance.

First-time visitors may respectfully accept prasādam without knowing the prayers. The local centre should confirm who prepares, offers and serves food and how dietary needs are handled.
