Ekādaśī and fasting: a careful introduction

Local dates, food customs and health considerations.

Introductory editorial content; doctrinal review is required before public publication.

Ekādaśī is a lunar observance in various Vaiṣṇava traditions. The date and time to break the fast (parāṇa) depend on local calendar calculations.

ISKCON communities commonly avoid grains and legumes on Ekādaśī, but forms of observance differ. Do not copy fasting times from another city or treat a menu as universal medical advice.

Children, pregnant people, those taking medication or managing health conditions and anyone with a history of eating disorders should seek professional medical advice before fasting. Reading, chanting and service can also be meaningful ways to participate.

Alicante’s site will only show detailed local observances after responsible review and approval.
